ABSTRACT

The Northeast is unique in many ways when compared to the rest of the United States. Agriculture in this area has its own flavor and problems associated with crop residues and farm management systems. Residue management on agricultural land in the Northeast often reflects the preponderance of population density and industrialization. The northeastern states range from Maine in the north to Virginia in the south and include the entire urban District of Columbia. Agriculture plays an important role in the economy of the Northeast, but is not as prominent as in other regions of the US Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, and Maryland generated over one billion dollars from farm sales in 1989. Residue materials used for mulching or soil amendments in the Northeast come from off-farm as well as on-farm sources. Certain areas in the Northeast produce large amounts of animal manure. The amount of manure produced can exceed the local area available for landspreading in reasonable quantities.
