ABSTRACT

I n o r d e r t o develop a b e t t e r unders tand ing o f t h e management, env i ronmenta l impact, and fundamental s o i l processes assoc ia ted w i t h c o n s e r v a t i o n t i l l a g e i t i s n a t u r a l and necessary t h a t we seek g e n e r a l i z a t i o n s about t h e d i f f e r e n c e s between conserva t ion t i l l a g e and conven t iona l t i l l a g e systems. A s u f f i c i e n t number o f o b s e r v a t i o n s i n d i c a t e t h a t some o f these g e n e r a l i z a t i o n s about c o n s e r v a t i o n t i l l a g e e f f e c t s on b i o l o g i c a l and chemical p r o p e r t i e s can be u s e f u l l y and w i d e l y appl ied. An example, d iscussed i n t h e p r e v i o u s paper, (D ick and Danie l , Chapter 7) i s t h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f n u t r i e n t s , o r g a n i c m a t t e r and m i c r o b i a l a c t i v i t y near t h e s o i l s u r f a c e under reduced t i l l a g e .
