ABSTRACT

The importance of the concern in the practice of engineering is a very new idea, since engineering has often been advertised as a people serving profession. The Corps was forced to reconsider the question and to develop a comprehensive statement outlining the impact of this project on the environment. Engineering education should address not only technical questions, but introduce the concept of values, and the methodologies for decision-making when values conflict. Ethical issues always arise on any engineering job, and the engineer must consider alternatives, recognize social costs and benefits, be aware of trade off possibilities, and understand the limits of technical solutions and economic analyses. A truly professional engineer will infuse ethics into his or her decision-making, and with the increasing pressure on the natural environment, a growing population, and accelerated technological development, environmental ethics will play an ever greater role in the engineers role in society.
