ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of key technical references useful in environmental impact studies on channelization projects. Numerous follow-on studies have been made of actual impacts caused by channelization projects; these impacts can be considered in terms of stream flows, water quality, and aquatic and terrestrial biology. In addition to aquatic ecosystems effects, channelization projects can also cause impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. Specific information to enable the preparation of the descriptions can be procured from existing data collected by governmental agencies or private groups, or it can be collected via specific baseline studies. Examples of prediction approaches which could be used include: a qualitative approach which relies on general knowledge of the impacts of similar projects, or specific results of comprehensive studies of similar projects a quantitative approach based on the use of mathematical models. It also includes a quantitative approach based on the use of physical models.
