ABSTRACT

This chapter presents primarily the repellent, antifeedant, oviposition deterrent, and growth and reproduction inhibitory effects of neem on stored product insects. Insect pests cause heavy foodgrain losses in storage, particularly at the farm level in tropical countries. There are several reports on the antifeedant effects of neem derivatives on stored grain insect pests. The age-old traditional use of neem derivatives for protection of stored commodities demonstrates their potential as effective and safe grain protectants. Neem oil at 1% applied to red gram seed as a surface protectant stopped the production of progeny by C. chinensis adults. A survey of various types of on-farm storage practices revealed that a combination of two or three insect control measures, including the use of neem leaves, was used by 29% of the farmers in Punjab and 47% of the farmers in Sind.
