ABSTRACT

The diagnosis of toxoplasmosis usually is based on one or more of the following: clinical signs, parasite isolation, antibody detection, cell-mediated responses, and antigen detection. However, more recently, the detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosis has become widespread. No single procedure gives absolute proof of infection rather than just infestation (i.e., chronic subclinical presence 390of the tissue cysts over many years); hence, ideally, a combination of two or more tests should be used.
