ABSTRACT

The genus Achimenes Pers. belongs to the Gesneriaceae. About 25 species are natives of northern Mexico, Brazil, and northern Argentina. One species is native to Jamaica. 1 Between 1820 and 1860, many hybrids between A. Candida, A. erecta, A. glabrata, A. grandiflora, A. longiflora, and A. patens were developed. 1 , 2 Today, only modem hybrids are of commercial value, which were developed during the last 20 years in Germany and the Netherlands. They have short, erect stems and early lateral branching, early flowering, big flowers, and clear colors.
