ABSTRACT

The pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) is an herbaceous perennial monocotyledonous plant that produces a single syncarpous fruit on a terminal inflorescence. After fruiting, one or a few shoots are initiated in the leaf axils and these develop and bear a ratoon crop fruit. The cycle can be repeated many times, and in Malaysia pineapple has been grown continuously for more than 25 years without replanting.
