ABSTRACT

The kangaroo-paw is a most colorful herbaceous perennial with woolly yellowish, green, red, or purple flowers. The leaves are linear or sword-shaped, basal, and arise from a thick rootstock. 1 , 2 As the common name indicates, it is a native of southwestern Australia, which is so rich in unusual flora and fauna. Anigozanthos manglesii is the floral emblem of Western Australia. 3 The various species belong to the Haemodoraceae family; 2 formerly it was placed in the Amaryllidaceae. 1 There are some 11 species according to Dixon and Hopper, 4 10 species according to Bailey, 2 and according to Beard, 3 8 species comprise Anigosanthos and a single species of Macropidea, “kangaroo paws”.
