ABSTRACT

The indoor foliage plant Aphelandra squarrosa (Acanthaceae), a native of Brazil, commonly called zebra plant and sometimes saffron spike, is a robust glabrous shrub 60 to 80 cm tall with ovate to ovate-elliptic leaves, glossy green above with conspicuous cream-white-marked veins. Bracts are yellow or yellow-orange. Commercial cultivars frequently grown are ‘Dania’, ‘Louisae’, ‘Apollo’, ‘Brockfield’, and others. The aphelandra is grown for its colorful bracts and foliage, and is an excellent small ornamental foliage specimen for placement on end tables, desks, and book shelves.
