ABSTRACT

The plant is native to Japan and is a member of the Fumariaceae or Papaveraceae, depending on the authority. 2 , 4 D. spectabilis (L.) Lem. flowers are zygomorphic and in a simple raceme. The sap of the plant is watery and the species grows sympodially (i.e., produces axillary inflorescences). The genus name Dicentra is derived from the Greek meaning two-spurred and refers to the corolla. The plants are used in cultivated or naturalistic gardens, and occasionally are grown as flowering potted plants for Valentine’s Day or spring displays in botanical gardens.
