ABSTRACT

Cashew trees are grown for their kernels, the embryo of the seed contained in the nut. Minor products are derived from the shell and from the fruitlike swollen pedicel. Cashew originates in South America, but has been distributed widely to such an extent that the major producing areas now occur in eastern Africa and south India. World production is estimated at 535 thousand tons of which only 16% originate in South America.
