ABSTRACT

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. (H. chinensis Hort., H. sinensis Hort.) is one of some 250 species of herbs, shrubs, or trees found growing from the tropics to temperate zones. Belonging to the Malvaceae, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. is the most highly prized ornamental species and has been so commonly grown in tropical and subtropical gardens that its exact site of origin is lost. No doubt it originated in China or in Vietnam, and it is commonly found in the East Indies as well. Illustrations are found in ancient art and recorded in ancient writings. 1 , 6
