ABSTRACT

Oenothera belongs to the family Onagraceae (Oenotheraceae), and consists of 15 subgenera originally distributed widely throughout North and South America. 7 Although native only to the New World, it was carried to Europe in the 17th century, and has now spread throughout Europe and other areas, including Japan. The subgenus Oenothera (Onagra or Euoenothera) includes O. lamarckiana with which de Vries worked extensively and developed his famous mutation theory. 18 This plant has played a distinctive role in the field of cytogenetics, cytotaxonomy, and evolution.
