ABSTRACT

Leafless trees of Tabebuia (Bignoniaceae), covered with masses of large, trumpet-shaped, pink or yellow flowers (Figure 1) present one of the most spectacular sights encountered in tropical and subtropical countries during the dry season. Trumpet trees of the genus Tabebuia together with Jacaranda mimosifolia and Spathodea campanulata, also members of the Bignoniaceae, are among the most common flowering trees planted in warm climates. 11 , 13 , 16 , 17 Several Latin American countries have designated species of Tabebuia as their national tree or flower: Brazil (T. serratifolia), Ecuador (T. chrysantha), El Salvador (T. rosea), Paraguay (Tabebuia sp.), and Venezuela (T. billbergii). 10
