ABSTRACT

Weigela (family Caprifoliaceae) is a genus of some 12 species of deciduous shrubs. They are native to the temperate zones of China, Korea, Japan, and Russia. In horticulture, the plants are grown in the landscape as specimen plants or as hedges for their flowers which are produced during the summer. 1 , 2 Due to the ease of hybridization within and among species, numerous cultivars are now available which surpass the original species. The species which have gone into producing some of the most popular hybrids of white, pink, carmine, or crimson flower types and hybrids with colored foliage are W. coraeenis Thunb., W. floribunda C. Koch, W. florida A. DC., and W. japonica Thunb. 9 Until a few years ago there were at least 150 named cultivars. 9
