ABSTRACT
Some basic preparation for responding to radiological incidents is necessary to maximize protection of personnel and patients. Consideration for the patient beyond basic life support or advanced life support regarding radiological incidents is actually application of common sense and good house-keeping. This chapter presents various aspects of prehospital and emergency department services in view of possible radiological risks. It provides the basics for evaluating, for establishing triage, and treatment of radiation accident patients. The emergency department procedures herein for handling and treatment of radiation accident patients have been adopted and modified from guidance developed by numerous professional radiological and medical personnel and are offered for consideration. Since a full spectrum of industrial injuries may occur at a nuclear power plant, responding to an injury at an industrial facility may require expertise in all manner of emergency medical services and extrication techniques.
