ABSTRACT

One has only to visit the poorer parts of the world to recognize the quantitative aspects of good nutrition. Without abundant food production at home or the monetary means to pay for imports, hunger is inevitable, at least for the poorer segments of a population. Stroll down the side streets of Port-au-Prince, Lima, or Calcutta and you will see the stark reality of calorie as well as protein deficiency. Go into the heavily populated countryside of many “third world” countries and you will see walking reminders that living on the land is no guarantee of good nutrition.
