ABSTRACT
Plant population is defined as the number of plants per unit area of ground. It has a very marked effect on crop yield and is regarded as an agricultural “input” in much the same way as is fertilizer, for example. An integral aspect of plant population is spatial arrangement, i.e., the pattern of distribution of plants over the ground. Within reasonable limits, spatial arrangement usually has less effect on yield than does plant number.
