ABSTRACT

Consideration of the nutritional significance of human lactation must include: 1 (1) maternal recommended dietary allowances (RDA), (2) the biochemical composition of breast milk (with some degree of comparison with cow’s-milk-based formulas), (3) the volume of milk secreted (in relation to hormonal control and maternal health and nutrition), (4) nondietary aspects of nutritional significance, and (5) associated pattern of nutritional disease.
