ABSTRACT

The world food supply, particularly that of protein is presently precarious, and massive localized shortages are anticipated if the population continues to increase as predicted. 25 More food protein will be needed from both conventional and nonconventional sources, particularly the latter because of the limitations on land and energy. The current and prospective problems in protein nutrition have been extensively and repeatedly addressed. 4 , 5 12 , 25 , 42 , 76 , 86 , 129 , 181 , 193 Data have been compiled on the overall protein supply and consumption. 12 , 25 Some controversy exists as to the extent of the shortage. 76 , 95 , 236 , 257 Nevertheless, too many humans are suffering from protein malnutrition because they are not getting enough dietary protein, though averaged statistics may not reveal this situation.
