ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the practical information on the growth and preservation of the bacterium; with a few simple precautions, most laboratories should experience minimal difficulty in growing Helicobacter pylori. The isolation of H. pylori from biopsy tissue is a procedure used routinely in laboratories throughout the world. Culture of H. pylori is needed for antibiotic resistance monitoring, strain classification, typing, or other research related endeavours, but the detection of low numbers of bacteria after antibiotic treatment may also require culture. The selection of appropriate conditions for the isolation and growth of H. pylori depends to a certain degree upon the sophistication of equipment available and the personal preferences of the investigators concerned. Cultivation of H. pylori in liquid media is desirable for studies on physiology and metabolism. The use of gas-permeable tissue culture flasks for the cultivation of H. pylori has been reported by D. A. Seeker’s group.
