ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the significance of the data in the context of human health. The question of potential health effects presents a considerable challenge. The difficulty applies to questions of ill health contingent on exposures to organics and to products of combustion. The development of personal monitors has given us a much better perception of the profile of indoor exposure to organic chemicals such as benzene, or to oxides of nitrogen. The general problems associated with indoor bacteria and fungi seem generally to be rather less well defined and certainly more difficult to measure. The recognition of the importance of contamination of poorly installed and maintained air conditioners was presented dramatically. The questions raised by indoor pollution and respiratory infections in children are not easy to solve, mainly because such infections are so common, which accounts for the contradictory nature of some of the epidemiological evidence.
