ABSTRACT

Institutional policies regarding employee training vary greatly. At some institutions, training is regarded as important, and ample time for training is readily available. The training of staff and waste handlers serves two important functions. One is the training of employees in how to implement the waste management system. The other is risk communication: not only explaining the rationale for the established procedures, but also providing information on occupational risks to satisfy the employee's right to know. The records are a regulatory requirement for the right-to-know training program, but they also serve a useful purpose in providing documentation of all training efforts. In developing a training program trainers are naturally concerned about course content. Hands-on training is best done one-on-one or in small groups where careful supervision is possible. Trainees should be able to practice the techniques until they feel comfortable performing them.
