ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the five steps that make up the environmental negotiation process. The five steps are as follows: do research, take stock, organize, act and react. It is critically important that one understands these five steps and that he/she utilizes each one of them in his/her strategic planning. Understanding these five steps and utilizing them correctly are the heart and soul of successful environmental negotiating strategy. Organizing and decisive action follow. Both contemplation and action are necessary for reader to succeed. Environmental organizing and environmental action without contemplation and forethought are often baseless and ignorant. Environmental reflection and environmental planning without organizing and action are lifeless and wasted. Success in any game depends on a variety of factors: the skills of the players, the relative strengths of the two opposing teams, the strategies and tactics chosen by the team leaders, and, of course, dumb luck.
