ABSTRACT

Connie Kubiak has to take stock of her strengths and weaknesses, and of her team's strengths and weaknesses. Connie decides that her greatest personal strength is her established reputation in her community for getting things done. She has a proven record of success in organizing community projects. Connie believes that she is creative, flexible, and persistent. She has the ability to work with all kinds of people. Connie knows that she is a leader who can motivate others. Connie admits that she has several areas of weakness as an environmental negotiator. She has trouble delegating work to others. She lacks technical expertise and is not familiar with the environmental regulatory process. Connie has never before engaged in an environmental negotiation. Returning to our toxic-waste site example, the neighborhood team and the company team prepared similar lists of strengths and weaknesses for themselves and for each other.
