ABSTRACT

As shown by the diverse topics discussed in the preceding chapters of this book, hazardous waste management is a dynamic and ever-expanding field of endeavor. This is certainly evidenced by the large body of current and pending hazardous waste regulation, the public attention focused on hazardous waste issues, the development of jargon and technology specific to the hazardous waste management field, and the ongoing efforts of the scientific and legal communities in a variety of hazardous waste-related areas. At the manufacturing plant level, hazardous waste management demands a significant commitment of manpower and resources for conducting routine tasks (e.g., compliance programs, waste collection/disposal, recordkeeping, etc.) as well as for extraordinary environmental circumstances such as spill events and remedial actions. The myriad of environmental issues and complexity of environmental problems often exceed in-house plant or corporate staff capabilities or resources. Time constraints can also become involved. When this occurs, the need for consulting services arises.
