ABSTRACT

Alkaloidsareoftendefinedasthosebasicsubstanceswhichcontainoneormorenitrogenatoms,usually incombinationaspartofacyclicsystem. 1-9Plantalkaloidsareoftenbittertothetasteandareavery heterogenousgroup.Manyalkaloidsareterpenoids,butsomearearomaticcompounds.Alkaloidsare frequentlyclassifiedonthebasisoftheringstructurethattheypossess(Figure15.1).Thechemical characteristicsandpossiblefunctionsofalkaloidsinplantsarepresentedinTable15.1.Asummaryof thedistribution,chemistry,andpharmacologicaleffectsofplantalkaloidsispresentedinTable15.2.
