ABSTRACT

The industry needs to unite behind its most effective trade or lobbying association and fight for stronger water regulations. The industry must be proactive. Educational efforts must be significant and extensive. There must be cohesive teamwork to address any crisis that may come up. It is absolutely essential the first International Conference on Molluscan Shellfish Depuration produces deliverable results for a struggling shellfish industry and for a hesitant, unsure consumer. These are serious comments and need to be addressed in conjunction with any efforts that this Conference may undertake. Assuring a healthful supply of shellfish in the face of persistent challenges is an industry and public responsibility. When there is adverse publicity anywhere in the country, it affects shellfish consumption everywhere. The media should be used as the powerful force it is by restoring public confidence with a series of profiles telling the consumer.
