ABSTRACT

For several years the oyster trade was supplied with oysters imported from Holland and France when the Ministry of Trade in 1970 decided to release all importation of oysters. New depuration facilities have been built partly for relaying of imported oysters and in anticipation of oyster cultivation. Since oyster diseases during the 1980's nearly eradicated the Ostreaedulis in France and Holland, mariculture of the more resistant Crassostreagigas has resulted in Denmark. The depuration facilities usually include two tanks with separate water supply. When all oysters from the tank are sold it must be emptied of water and cleaned before a new batch can be relayed. In order to make a sufficient cleaning possible, the tanks must be elevated from the floor and placed at a certain distance from the wall. Before a depuration plant is taken into use, the building, the tanks, and the water supply must be approved by the Danish Fish Inspection Service.
