pH-Selective Microelectrodes: Construction and use in Investigations of Transmembrane Sodium-Hydrogen Exchange

This chapter is largely a methodological one. The initial sections describe the construction, calibration, and use of ion-selective microelectrodes for measuring pH both intracellularly and extracellularly. Later sections discuss how the technique can be applied to the study of Na/H exchange. These later sections also contain a brief survey of the evidence for Na/H exchange obtained from microelectrode measurements of intracellular pH (pH_i).
