ABSTRACT

Gas-filled detectors represent probably the most widely used class of radiation detectors. All detectors in this class are based on the collection of ions produced in the sensitive volume of the detector due to the passage of ionizing radiation. Ionization chambers, proportional counters and Geiger-Müller counters are the primary detectors in this class. However, ionization is also important in a number of other detector systems that will be discussed in subsequent chapters.
