ABSTRACT

The important step in conserving household water use is to search for and eliminate leaks in the plumbing system. A leaking toilet can add several hundred gallons per day to the drain field, and may well cause immediate failure of an evapotranspiration system. A pressure-reducing valve can be placed in the main water supply pipe that leads to the house. A method of reducing toilet water use is to refrain from flushing the toilet after each use when there is only urine in the bowl. Urine does not normally contain pathogenic bacteria, and with the toilet lid down, will not present an aesthetic problem for several hours. Other steps to water use reduction are not to use the toilet to flush away used facial tissues and cigarette butts, and not to throw into the clothes washer every piece of clothing that has a speck of dirt on it.
