ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some diseases or lesions which are seen with some frequency, or are of a particular interest for comparative pathologic study, or perhaps of some conditions which the authors feel warrants description and further study. Many of the diseases brought together here have been described as individual case reports or part of surveys of marine mammal diseases in various scientific journals. It becomes obvious when the authors start to describe some the lesions in animals in which they do not even know the normal functional physiology of a particular organ, and in which a specific etiology has not been determined, that they must resort to drawing comparisons with similar lesions in other animal species or man in which the mechanism is understood. The lesions are presented according to organ system, realizing that in some cases the lesions have multi-organ distribution or effects, and the authors are usually describing the most obvious or most severe lesion.
