Renal Hypophosphatemia

Playing a central role in phosphate metabolism it is understandable that perturbations in kidney functions will have a direct effect on phosphate homeostasis. Whereas interference with glomerular function results in elevation in serum phosphate concentration, abnormal function of the tubules will result in most cases in a reduction in the serum mineral concentration. The effect of reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) on phosphate metabolism and the rare instances of tubular hyperphosphatemia are discussed in Chapter 13. This chapter addresses disorders of tubular hypophosphatemia (Table 1).
