Rickets can occur when the availability of calcium or phosphorous to the skeleton is impaired. The vitamin D endocrine system is a major modulator of calcium and phosphorus metabolism.1'3 It follows, therefore, that rickets could result from deficiency or impairments in the metabolism and action of vitamin D (for review, see References 4 to 7). The various forms of rickets due to vitamin D deficiency or impairment of vitamin D metabolism are summarized in Table 1.
