ABSTRACT

Perennial hosts are easy source of survival of plant pathogens which attack them. In such areas this wild host belonging to a different family may be of some importance for survival of the fungus. However, the chances of very prolonged active survival of even these pathogens have been doubted by many workers. Survival of soft rot causing bacterium Erwin species has always been a matter of controversy. Plant parasitic fungi are the only organisms that produce spores, analogous to eggs of nematodes, and other structures for their inactive survival. Survival of plant pathogens in association with insects is not uncommon in the nature. Besides fungi, the bacteria from another important group of plant pathogens to survive in soil. Among infectious plant pathogens fungi, nematodes and phanerogams survive through their resting or dormant structures. In majority of such cases the plant organs used for raising new crops, are the major sources of survival for plant pathogens.
