ABSTRACT

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its amendments have a dramatic impact on the way in which we view the treatment and distribution of water in the US The water supply industry is undergoing a major revolution that may transform it beyond recognition. Although the SWDA is in a progressive regulatory development phase, once this phase is completed, a difficult period of implementation will lie ahead. Implementation of the SWDA will have a substantial economic impact on the industry. All systems using surface water or ground water under direct influence of surface water must meet the treatment requirements. Requirements for disinfection of surface waters are defined in the recently promulgated Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR). The SWTR is the result of a series of amendments to the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and was promulgated on June 29, 1989.
