Treating Electroplating Wastewater Using an Anaerobic Filter
A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Figure 1. Each filter consisted of a Plexiglass column approximately 60 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter, providing a total volume of 3.18 L. Each filter was packed with washed stones with an approximate diameter of 1.5 cm which provided empty bed volumes of 1.40 and 1.34 L and porosities of 0.44 and 0.42 for filters A and B, respectively. Each filter had 4 sampling ports evenly distributed over its height. The effluent was collected in a closed flask filled with nitrogen to minimize the sulfide loss due to volatilization.
