ABSTRACT

The scarcity of truly experienced Availability, Reliability and Maintainability (ARM) specialists, coupled with the ever increasing demand for ARM programmes, has lead to investigations into ways of making specialist knowledge in these fields more widely available. A major focus of attention in this area has been the application of knowledge-based systems.

This paper discusses the ADVISE system, a suite of knowledge-based software modules aimed largely at supporting Reliability analysis. Following a brief overview, a more detailed account is given of two of the areas addressed: Project Planning and Reliability Modelling. The exploitation of the software, and plans for its future development are also discussed.
