ABSTRACT
The STARS programme package is a knowledge based system for safety and reliability analysis, mainly for complex process plants. The programme package can be used during all stages of the design of the plants. This paper will focus on the applications of the STARS programme package for safety analysis of chemical process plants. Important parts of the STARS system are the knowledge bases. This paper describes the use of four knowledge bases which are used in the qualitative analysis at process unit level. These four bases are the chemical substance knowledge base, the chemical reaction knowledge base, the unwanted chemical reaction knowledge base, and the plant/unit knowledge base.
