ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the design of safe research and development team laboratories which addresses unique design problems. The problems includes the stages of design and critical decisions made at each; predesign and design issues for team laboratories; and two examples of team research laboratory designs that met the needs of the researchers and the owners. The design process can be likened to an ascending spiral. The design is executed by a team of qualified architects and engineers, who are fully informed of applicable codes, standards, and regulations. The design architects and engineers, within standard contractual agreements, perform regular inspections of the work to check compliance with the intent of the contract documents. Safety professionals who are responsible for setting and promoting safety standards in the organization should schedule and conduct walk-through of the project with all occupants. Health and safety professionals should consult with the design engineers to specify the types of hoods to be installed.
