ABSTRACT

Research which involves handling large numbers of varied hazardous materials bears with it the potential for personnel exposure and environmental contamination. The ability to safely and efficiently handle milligram to kilogram quantities of such materials has been designed and built into Chemical Containment Laboratories (CCL). The isolation laboratories are equipped to support specific chemical handling activities. Chemical storage areas have a high potential for contamination and, thus, are isolated from all areas and vented mechanically to the outside. The major types of equipment in a CCL include laboratory furniture, fume and canopy hoods, safety equipment, and special operations equipment, such as chemical storage units. The shower/dressing area has two changing areas: one for changing and storing street clothes and one for changing and storing laboratory clothes. The general laboratory areas are the hub of the CCL since all other laboratory areas are accessed from these areas.
