ABSTRACT
Operating LWRs were not designed specifically to cope with severe accidents in which core geometry is disrupted. However, there are several features in currently operating LWRs that would minimize the progression of a severe accident by limiting the movement of core debris. This chapter discusses those features and identifies specific systems and components that would mitigate the consequences of a severe accident.
