ABSTRACT

Monitoring and assuring the quality and safety of the final product is an integral component of a total parenteral nutrition service and should be the responsibility of the pharmacy department. The best way to be certain that a product contains the ingredients stated on the label is strict adherence to good manufacturing procedures. The velocity of air going through the high-efficiency particulate retention (HEPA) filter is measured using an anemometer or an air velocity meter. A HEPA filter leak test should be performed during installation of the filter to be certain that the unit is properly functioning. The area where solutions are prepared should be cleaned daily and microbiologically monitored. Ceilings, walls, and floors should be cleaned with a disinfectant on a regular basis and air filters changed to ensure good quality of air. Sterility testing may be done by random selection of samples of the product. Usually they can be carried out by the microbiological department of the institution.
