ABSTRACT

Most officers would welcome the opportunity to do undercover work, but they are never given the opportunity because someone has tagged them as “average” officers. One big problem in working an undercover case is obtaining the necessary cover. Receiving telephone calls from suspects is an important part of any undercover case. A suspect legitimately wants the undercover agent’s phone number so he can contact him when and if the contraband arrives. Providing an appearance commensurate with the locale, the type of suspect being pursued, and the assumed identity of the agent is usually a matter of anticipating commonly accepted standards. In connection with undercover cases, it sometimes becomes necessary to supply the undercover agent with an appropriate automobile. In working undercover, everyone involved in the case should sit down for a good talk session and attempt to think of all the eventualities beforehand. The undercover agent should allow his undercover personality and attitude reflect the demeanor of the suspect.
