ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a listing and reference to the regulatory authorization for use of residues and by-products in the feed of ruminants. Substances that do not meet the criteria to be eligible for Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status have been determined by the US Food and Drug Administration to require a food additive regulation. The US Food and Drug Administration has permitted the individual states to regulate use of recycled animal waste. The position of the various states is outlined in the report of the Animal Waste Task Force. Almond Hulls are obtained by drying and grinding that portion of the almond fruit which surrounds the nut. It must be reasonably free of the nut shell and other foreign material. Animal By-Product Meal is the dry product from animal tissues prepared for feeding purposes by tanking with live steam or dry rendering. It must be designated according to its protein content.
