ABSTRACT

The source of water supply for the city is Stoner Creek, which flows through Paris and into Hinkston Creek, a tributary of Licking River. Local interests have reported taste and odor problems originating within the supply system occurring concurrently with growth of an excessive amount of duckweed in the water supply impoundment near the water intake. As a result of past water supply problems, the city of Winchester has gone to the Kentucky River for water and created a transbasin diversion. Sewage plant effluent could be returned to the Kentucky River Basin, but this would deny reusage of the water to downstream users in the Licking River Basin. The white amur appears to be one of the most promising biological agents for the control of many species of aquatic plants, particularly for those which are submersed and floating. The biochemical oxygen demand was very high in small aquaria and substantially lower in concrete tanks and ponds.
