ABSTRACT
Beginningin1956,investigationswereundertakeninMaltatoestablishaneffective methodofimmunizinggoatsandtoinvestigatediagnosticmethodswithaviewtodeveloping aneradicationprogram.14Extensiveinvestigationsl~dtotheselectionofRev.1vaccine, andvaccinationofyounggoatsbeganin1959.Despiteonlyabout50%offemalekidsbeing vaccinated,thecampaignseemedtobecausingadropinthenumberofcasesofhuman brucellosis,andby1968theannualincidencehadfallento26cases,or0.86per10,000. Atthislevelcomplacencysetin,thecontrolmeasureswerenotactivelypursued,andthe levelofhumanbrucellosisremainedaboutthesameforthenext20years:therewere29 casesin1985and22in1986.Thissupposedlylowincidenceisaboutdoublethatofthe worstrecordedyearforhumanbrucellosisintheU.S.
