ABSTRACT

Acerola fruit is produced commercially, primarily in Puerto Rico, and processed into juice. The juice may be used as an ascorbic acid supplement and to modify the color of passion fruit, guava, and pineapple juices. The anthocyanins of ‘Forastero’ cacao beans are located in special pigmented cells. At present, lychee is grown commercially in many countries including South Africa, Australia, Japan and the US Many tropical fruits of the Myrtaceae or Java plum family are used to make juices, preserves, and gelatins. The purple pigmentation in passion fruit flowers is controlled by a single gene which is dominant over green. The coffee plant, Coffea spp, originated in Ethiopia and spread through Arabia into many tropical regions of the world, where it is grown on a large scale. The mango, Mangifera indica L., is considered to be the king of tropical fruits. The pineapple is a tropical fruit native of South America, but is also cultivated in tropical Asia and Africa.
